The Reverend Newell E. Bishop of North Stonington died on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, of complications from Parkinson's Disease.
Newell was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on March 26, 1938, the elder son of Dorothy and Edward Bishop. Newell earned his Bachelor of Arts from Williams College in 1960 and his Bachelor of Divinity from Yale University in 1963.
Newell's calling to the ministry in the United Church of Christ led to his service at the Evangelical Congregational Church of Charlestown, N.H., for 11 years and then at the North Stonington Congregational Church for 25 years. During his ministry, he was the leader of many summer music conferences at UCC camps in both New Hampshire and Connecticut. He also served on numerous conference committees in the two states.
Newell served his communities as a member of the boards of education in Charlestown and North Stonington, and acted as chaplain for the North Stonington Fire Department for several years.
Two of Newell's great passions were mission work advocacy and music. He raised thousands of dollars over the years for CROP, a division of Church World Service. Newell was the youth Choir Director at the North Stonington Congregational Church until his retirement from the ministry in 1999, and he continued to sing in the senior choir there throughout this past spring. He sang in the tenor section for a number of other groups including the Williams College Choir and Glee Club, the Yale Divinity School Choir, and the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Chorus. Newell was active in planning and participating in the Mystic Area Ecumenical Council Choir festival every spring and was recognized with a choral piece written in his honor upon his retirement from the ministry.
Newell was an enthusiastic gardener and loved working outdoors. He enjoyed running the country roads and swimming in the pond at Clarks Falls. He eagerly supported every endeavor of his wife and children, from writing trumpet music to watching the birth of foals and cheering at cross country meets.
Newell is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sylvia "Seya"; his son, Newell Jr. "Ned" of New London; his daughter, Mary Sherman and son-in-law Jeffrey Sherman of North Stonington; his brother, Henry Bishop and sister-in-law Barbara Bishop of Fairfield, Conn.; and many members of his extended family.
A memorial service will be held at The North Stonington Congregational Church, 89 Main St,, North Stonington, on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 3 p.m.
Memorial gifts may be made to CROP/World Church Service (www.churchworldservice.org) or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (www.michaeljfox.org). The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Historic downtown Mystic is assisting Newell's family.
