As the bright light of the full moon faded early Friday morning, February 22, 2008, so did one of the great smiles and enduring sprits of Aroostook County. Aaron David Martin, 26, who was born November 24, 1981, drew his last breath peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Diagnosed in 1990 with a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy, Aaron spent the next 18 years fighting beyond the boundaries of his disease. He adapted to make the best of every situation through all stages of his condition. Aaron received a standing ovation as he graduated from Caribou High School in 2001. He focused his interest in computer sciences and kept his intellect sharp by playing chess and listening to books on tape, but a majority of his time, and perhaps his strongest asset, was spent spreading laughter with his contagious sense of humor. Aaron Martin is a testament of the power of love and fierce determination to live. After a major heart attack in August 2006, he was given only hours to live. The hospital in Bangor even wrote letters of condolence to the family. Despite his diagnosis, the love in his heart alone continued to sustain him for the next year and a half.

Surviving in addition to his parents, Milton David and Pauline Roy Martin of Caribou, are his two sisters, Tricia Martin of Caribou and Dr. Katina Martin and her husband, Jeffrey Weaber; his niece, Ada Eren Weaber, all of Salisbury, Vt.; his paternal grandmother, Doris Martin of Caribou; many aunts, uncles and cousins; as well as his constant canine companion, Kobe.

Aaron was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Lucienne and Leo Roy; and his paternal grandfather, Raoul Martin.

While we mourn the loss of Aaron’s short life, we simultaneously celebrate his amazing spirit and saintly nature as we carry with us the lessons of love and endurance that this remarkable young man taught us all. May we all learn to embrace life with our hearts as he did.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated 11 Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Aaron’s cousin, Father Kevin Martin officiating. Interment was at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
