Son of Bernard Francis & Delia Emma (Bracelen) Schmitt, a veteran of World War II. He married Florence Yeager on June 7, 1949 in San Mateo, California and to their union were born, David Anthony, Suzanne Marie and Mary Ann Schmitt.
