Obituary for Mariam Alberta Atcheson

Mariam Alberta Atcheson passed away peacefully on July 1, 2020 in Derby, Kansas, surrounded by her loving family. She was 87 years old.

Mariam was born in Colfax, Iowa, December 4, 1932 to Harry Edward and Ethel Mae (Haddon) Deskin. She was the youngest of five children. Mariam grew up in Colfax, and graduated from Colfax High School in 1950. After graduation, she attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

Mariam met Orian Atcheson in Winterset, Iowa. He was driving around with his friends, when he ran into another friend, Marge, in town. Marge was with Mariam, and Orian was smitten and asked Marge to introduce him to Mariam. The couple was united in marriage on November 5, 1954.

Orian accepted a job with Thorpe Well and the couple traveled with the company for several years before they built a home in Des Moines, Iowa. Orian and Mariam were blessed with four children: Mark, Brad, Kris, and Le Anne.

Farming was always Orian’s first love, so he and Mariam purchased their first farm in 1967 outside of Lucas, Iowa. Mariam loved being a mom and a farmer’s wife. She was a confident and loving mother, a good listener, and a wonderful cook. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to laugh. She had a sweet, gentle and playful nature that endeared all who knew her.

After the kids grew up and left the nest, Orian & Mariam moved several times out of state where she worked as a bookkeeper for both PepsiCo and Waddell and Reed. Mariam loved music and one of her biggest joys was singing with the Sweet Adelines. She enjoyed this for many years and even after she retired from singing, she continued to frequent their performances as often as possible.

After retirement, the couple purchased a home and acreage outside of Lucas, Iowa, where they again enjoyed life on the farm. Eventually, they chose to give up farm life and moved into the nearby town of Chariton. They loved spending time with family and other friends. In the early years of retirement, they spent winters enjoying the warmer weather in Apache Junction, Arizona.

In 2013, Mariam and Orian moved to Wichita, Kansas to be closer to family. Holidays were fun times in Wichita, with children and grandchildren coming from California and Missouri to celebrate together at her youngest son Kris’s home. These occasions often included family and friends of her children, as Mariam and Orian were ‘family’ to everyone.

Mariam will be dearly missed by her children: Mark Atcheson, Brad (Gail) Atcheson, Kris (Lisa) Atcheson, and Le Anne Atcheson; 11 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; along with many relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Orian, her parents and her siblings: Norman Deskin, Harry Deskin Jr., Merle Deskin, and Don Deskin.

It was Mariam’s wish that she be cremated and laid to rest in Chariton, Iowa, next to her husband. A visitation honoring her life will be held Friday, August 21, 2020, from 4:00 until 7:00 pm at the Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Chariton, Iowa, followed by a private graveside service at the Chariton cemetery located in Chariton, Iowa, on Saturday, August 22, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Serenity Hospice at 3221 N. Toben St., Suite 200, Wichita, Kansas 67226, or to the Humane Society of Lucas County at 118 E. Lincoln Avenue, Chariton, IA 50049.
