Jens Detlef Bahnsen was born on January 9, 1901 in Bredstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was the son of Detlef Christian Bahnsen and Ida Marie Jacobsen Bahnsen. He was one of five children in the family.
Jens was united in marriage to Sophia Marie Christiansen on October 23, 1925 in Breklum, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
Jens and Sophia came to the United States in the spring of 1926, arriving in New York on April 3, and together they came to the Avoca area on April 5th.
They were the parents of two children: a son who died at birth, and a daughter, Anita Catherine.
They farmed in the Hancock-Avoca area until 1945 when they moved to Avoca and Jens worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker until his retirement.
Jens passed away at his home on Thursday, November 7, 1985. He had attained the age of 84 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; one brother and his infant son.
Jens leaves to mourn his passing: his wife, Sophia; his daughter, Anita and her husband Howard Carswell of Lidderdale; a grandson; a granddaughter; and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are: one sister, Alvine and her husband John Martensen of Chicago, Illinois; two nephews and their families of Chicage; besides several nephews and nieces in Germany.
