Herman Roger Welk
January 12th, 1945 - February 19th, 2019

Herman Roger Welk died on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 from a sudden heart attack. Service: Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. at Timbers at the Lodge, Sun City Roseville. Final resting place: Saint Aloysius Catholic Church, Hague, North Dakota. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to “The Gathering” c/o BNC National Bank P.O. Box 910 Linton, ND 58552.

Herman was born January 12, 1945 to John and Barbara Welk. Herman was the youngest of twelve children, ten boys and two girls. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Aloys, Clarence, Eugene, Sally, Alfred, Joe and John.

Herman grew up on the farm in Hague, and at 12 years old moved to “town” in Strasburg, North Dakota, home of his famous cousin Lawrence Welk. At 18, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served four years stationed in Adak, Alaska, was a navigator on multiple aircraft carriers in Vietnam and finished in Alameda, California. He was incredibly proud of his service and credits the military for shaping his life and training him in electronics. He wrapped up a successful 50-year career with last 20 years at Applied Linear Devices in Sunnyvale, California before retiring.

Herman met Lorraine Thompson and married in May 1971. During their 48-year marriage they had two children, raising Gretchen and Gregg in Morgan Hill, California. He and Lorraine lived there for 40 years until they retired to Roseville, California. And while he never moved back to North Dakota, he visited often, making sure his kids and later grandchildren, understood the importance of his heritage, love of family and hard work.

Golf became Herman’s passion in the 70s. He, like many true golfers, could recount every hole on every course he had ever played. From the 9-hole course he circled at Linton Country Club, to playing Pebble Beach with his life-long friends, to his latest favorite, Timber Creek at Sun City, he loved everything about the game. Getting new clubs (again, and again), driving his own golf cart (filled with snacks) and enjoying the beautiful views. He loved the easy banter and teasing with great friends, especially his grandson. Herman played just days before his passing.

Herman is survived and missed by his wife, Lorraine; children, Gretchen Littlejohn and Gregg Welk; son-in-law, Chris Littlejohn; grandchildren Jake and Hayley Littlejohn; brothers Leo Welk, Don Welk, Francis Welk, sister Ann Fitzsimmons, and dozens of nieces and nephews.
