Son of Preston B. Adkins and Virginia "Jenny" (Lilly) Adkins of Mercer County, WV.

His first wife was Louisa Alice Bragg (daughter of John and Eliza Jane (Shrewsbury) Bragg) whom he wed June 1, 1897 in Summers County. Their children were:
John Thurmond Adkins (1899–1964)
Virginia R. "Jennie" Adkins (1902–1915)
Herman (1903-?)
Henry L Adkins (1905–?)
Rufus Newton Adkins (1907–1994)
James Adkins (1908–?)
Alice died November 18, 1917 at their home in the lumber camp in Blue Jay, Raleigh County, WV. Her place of burial is unknown.

His second wife was Liza Ann "Annie" (Martin) Lane, whom he wed October 30, 1918. They don't appear to have had any children together. Annie's children Pearl, Charles, Thelma, Ora and Brady Lane lived with her and Willie. Annie preceded Willie in death, and is buried in the Blue Jay Cemetery.
