After his father died and his mother remarried, Ralph and older sister Myrtle Margaret finished out their teenage years with their maternal grandparents, Thomas and Mary LaRue.
On his WWI Draft Registration on June 5, 1917, Ralph reported that he was working on his uncle Fred LaRue's farm and he claimed draft exemption due to weak kidneys. He must have worked that out, because he did enlist on June 23, 1819 and was honorably discharged June 8, 1919. He had been a Private in Company G, 351st Infantry, 88th Division.
In about 1921 Ralph married Mary Abigail "Gail" Hamilton.
