The son of Henry A. Duncan and Nancy Annie Woodland, Howard was 1 of 13 children. The family lived in St. Louis city, Missouri, Howard was married to Irene Kelly. They were the parents of 1 child.

Howard worked as a boiler maker for the Heine Safety Boiler Company in St. Louis.

On the morning of 05 Feb 1917, Howard was severely injured when a large piece of boiler equipment fell on him and a co-worker. The other man died immediately. Howard was taken to Christian Hospital with a broken leg, fractured ribs and other injuries.

Howard died at the hospital less than 4 hours later at the age of 42 years, 5 months and 25 days. His death was attributed to shock and the internal injuries he suffered when he was crushed in the accident.

He was survived by his wife, Irene; 1 daughter, Gladys Duncan; his father, Henry Duncan; 6 brothers, Edward Duncan, Walker/Walter Duncan, Govey Duncan, Amos Duncan, Shelby Duncan and Richard Duncan; and 2 sisters, Mary Duncan and Lulu Dickson.

Howard was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral services were conducted at 6:30 a.m. on the morning of 08 Feb 1917 at the Bensiek Chapel located at 3710 North Grand Avenue in St. Louis. Burial was at Mount Olive in Robertsville, Missouri.

One man was crushed to death and another was severely injured when a water-leg, weighing two tons, toppled over at 9 o'clock this morning at the Heine Safety Boiler Co.'s plant, 5319 Marcus avenue. The man killed was C. C. Proctor, 50 years old, of 5379 Ruskin avenue. Howard Duncan, 42 years old, living near Twentieth and Dodier streets, suffered a broken leg, several fractured ribs and internal injuries.

A water-leg is a big box-like vessel used for holding water before it is admitted to the boiler. This one was 7 feet high, 10 feet long and 10 inches wide, with walls of steel half an inch thick.
