John Mutchler, 86, of Hollywood FL, formerly of Easton, died Monday, Feb. 17, in a Florida hospital.

He was retired from his business, the Sure Rest Mattress Co. in Fort Lauderdale FL.

Born Aug. 26, 1911, in Easton, he was a son of the late George and Fanny Mutchler.

His first wife, the former Freda Gunderman of Phillipsburg, died Jan. 24, 1944. His second wife, the former Janice Jones, died earlier.

Fort Lauderdale mattress maker John Mutchler doesn't take his job lying down; at age 74 he is one of the nation's oldest active mattress makers and the inventor of his own recently trademarked -Mystery Mattress.

His friends call him and co-worker Joseph Gary, 71, of Fort Lauderdale "The Over-the-Hill Gang." Mutchler calls himself "a smart man who does not want to retire."

Hand-producing mattresses locally for the past 30 years, Mutchler has created heart-shaped beds, wall-to-wall beds, yacht beds for country singers Barbara Mandrell and Jimmy Dean and padded cells.

"I wouldn't consider retirement," said Mutchler. "I was approached by many retired men who were sick of sitting at home. They wanted a job -- any job. I knew then that I couldn't retire."

Mutchler works a seven-day week, driving from Hollywood to the Sure Rest Mattress Company in Fort Lauderdale, a company he founded in 1956.

Recently recognized at a bedding convention in Kansas City, Mo., as the "Oldest Active Mattress Maker," Mutchler says his secret to success is keeping active.

"I can't sit around twiddling my thumbs all day, I've got to keep busy," he said.

Long-time friend Leo Major of Fort Lauderdale says, "He is an inspiration for the work ethic and to keeping active at the age of 74. I've seen him work a seven-day week -- and when he has insomnia he drives to his factory and goes back to work -- remarkable man."
