He joined the Army under Age was at Chatham 1891 and went to India. According to his brother he had served in 13 different regiments. once deserting but being under age at the time absolved. We know the Territorials the Royal Field Artillery and the Scots Regiment so 10 more to go.
Next we know he joined again for world war 1 -- First in the territorials but only lasted a few weeks, then he joined the army again in the Royal Field Artillery no 86855. he was sent to Ypres France1915, where he was gassed. Medal roll index says received theVIctory and British Medalsref 223b page 24608 & thee Star medal ref RFA 8 aob page 6270 remarks as SWB list RA 806.
When he was gassed he was temporarily blinded and discharged 27/7/1917 with the rank of Sargeant listed as a saddler/Genner.He received a war pension of 10/- a week.
He was later a general carter and by the sound of things a jack of all trades. he was reputed to have had tattoos of Vesta Tilly, a Jews Harp(Lyre) and also curling around his body a snake, He also used to wrestle . and was said by Godfrey to be immensly strong once at the Colisium theatre in Edinburgh Rd Portsmouth egged on by friends he took the challenge of the strong man act and picked up a cart
He was outlawled from South Harting for demonstrating how to kill a goat by slitting its throat, --these stories were told by his nephew Godfrey son of John who held him high esteem. there was a falling out of the brothers when Charles punched John for mistreating his wife.
Charles was an unsuccessful candiate for the Portsmouth Town Council app 1919/1920 his daughter Olive remembers walking around as a child holding a board advertising his canditature.
His wife Annie had been engaged to his Brother Richard.-- Richard died of cancer only discovered after being kicked by a horse
