William worked on the Sugar Plantation at Hamakua, Hawaii in 1910. He was an overseer. Also working there was his brother Peter and his nephew James Albert Gibb who was 18 years old and apparently working a summertime job just prior to his last year at Oahu College. James is also in Alta Mesa Cemetery.

During WWII he and his wife Sophie were civilians prisoners interned in Santo Tomas in Manila.
