William Clough appeared in Tyrrell County North Carolina records in 1801. He purchased a land grant in 1805 and in 1806 married Nancy Brickhouse Davenport (widow of Joshua Davenport). He was continually mentioned in the Tyrrell public records from 1818-19 as witness, bondsman, surveyor, juror, etc.

William and Nancy appear as a household on the 1810 census. No mention of William or Nancy in the 1820 census. Could have been in another household or deceased. Two of the children were indentured as "Clough orphans" in 1823 indicating that both parents were deceased. Son Rowan remained in Tyrrell County and is our ancestor. Son William migrated to Alabama and many descendants are there today. (Rebecca Clough Harpole is our contact with the Alabama Cloughs.)

What happened to William and Nancy? And where did William live before 1801? What happened to Joshua Davenport, Nancy's first husband? Did any of Nancy and Joshua's children survive? We have searched records for many years with no positive leads. We will appreciate any big or small clues we can follow up to find William's origin and forebears.

Nancy was the daughter of Matthew Brickhouse and Priscilla Howett in Tyrrell County. Could she and/or William have been living with Brickhouse relatives in 1820? Or Davenports?

The female lines have been traced back to early 1700's through the Tyrrell County families of Bateman, Copeland, Owens, Jones, Brickhouse, Howett, Davenport, Hassell, Wynn and others. Clough still eludes us!

Children of William Clough and Nancy Brickhouse are:
1. William Clough, born 10 Feb 1813 in Tyrell County, North Carolina; died 23 Apr 1878 in Calhoun County, Alabama
2. Rowan Clough, born Abt. 1815 in Tyrell County, North Carolina; died 28 Oct 1873
3. Mary Clough
