James was a Private in the U.S. Army during World War I. There is a wonderful newspaper article on how the military headstone came to be put on his grave that is pictured here. The Lansing State Journal 10 June 2014, page A7, yes, the military marker was only put there in May 2014.

He married his 1st wife, Myrtle Johnson on 25 December 1918 at Hubbard Lake, Michigan. They had 3 sons, Elmer, Arnold, and Ralph Brenay. James and Myrtle divorced on 3 August 1926 in Presque Isle County, MI.

James married his 2nd wife, Frances Irene (Wright) Petzler on 17 January 1927 in Rogers City, Michigan. It was both their 2nd marriages. They had one son, Laverne James Brenay, a few months after his birth James tragically died at the age of 33 from Pneumonia. James was an Electrician.

At the time of writing this Bio, August 2020, I can not locate a Find a Grave Profile for his 2nd wife, Frances Irene Wright, born 11 July 1902 in Wyandotte, Michigan. Her Parents: James Arthur Wright and Nellie Matilda Nelson. Her 1st husband was Charles Petzler married on 3 Jan 1921 in Detroit. James was her 2nd husband, after his tragic early death she then married husband #3, William Gamache on 8 Feb 1930 in Pontiac, they had no children, divorced on 19 Feb 1946 in Michigan. She then married husband #4, Roland Centers on 3 Feb 1947 in Pontiac, Michigan. Frances died on 11 Feb 1998, her last residence was in Rochester, Michigan.
