Albert Leonard “Len” Ayres, 84, passed away at Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Orillia in the early morning hours of March 7, 2013.
He is best remembered as the owner of the “Little Pastry Shop” on Hurontario Street from 1960 to 1988, when he “retired” to Loblaws, where he spent five years as a baker/cake decorator. Len contributed to many Collingwood birthdays and weddings with his cakes, and provided many tasty calories with his pies, donuts and bread. He always enjoyed a chance to play cards or laugh with friends. He was also active in the Collingwood Lions Club, and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Collingwood.
Albert Leonard Ayres was born on June 28, 1928 in Guelph, Ontario to parents Annie Violetta (Nancy) Ayres and Frank Ayres. He was pre-deceased by his sisters May, Bette and Margie, his brother John, and his oldest son Albert Leonard Jr. (Lenny). He is survived by his wife, Dinah, estranged wife Dorothy, sisters Maude and Joyce, sons Jim, Donald and Bob, stepdaughter Debra, daughter-in-laws Heather and Lori, and son-in-law Gord, granddaughter Jackie-Blue, grandsons Michael, William, Bobby and Blake, step-grandson Chad and great-grandson Hayden. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Albert Leonard Ayres’ ashes will be interred at Trinity United cemetery in a private family ceremony in late-April. The public is invited to attend a celebration of his life at the Royal Canadian Legion in Collingwood on May 4th, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The family would like to extend many Thanks to Dr.Langford and Nurses at the Collingwod General & Marine Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the RVH Kidney Clinic or the Princess Margaret Hospital.
R.I.P. Leonard “Papa” Ayres - Father, Grandfather, Great-grandfather, Husband, Uncle, Friend... and of course, baker. You will be missed by more than just taste buds. 1928-2013.
