Born in Somerville, NJ, October 8, 1931, daughter of the late Raymond and Myrtle Hann Mathews, Joan formerly resided in Quakertown, NJ and had resided in the Pittstown area most of her life.
Joan was a graduate of Flemington High School, Class of 1949 and formerly employed by the Doll Factory, Flemington, NJ, later by Clinton National Bank and then was Assistant Bank Manager for Fleet Bank before retiring.
Always active, she was a former member of the Quakertown United Methodist Church and was currently a member of the Bethlehem Presbyterian Church at Grandin where she was an elder, choir member and member of the Church Bible Study there. Joan was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Quakertown Fire Company; and a trustee and secretary of the Locust Grove Cemetery Association, Quakertown, NJ. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting, traveling, painting, and playing cards, especially pinochle.
Surviving are two daughters, Pattie McGourty and Susan Chaya, both of Pittstown, NJ; four sons, Robert Suydam of Phillipsburg, NJ, David Suydam of New Bloomfield, PA, Kevin Suydam of Pittstown, NJ and Peter Suydam of Phillipsburg, NJ; sixteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Joan was pre-deceased by her brother, Harold Mathews, her sister, Marjorie Mathews, and a grandson, Robbie Suydam.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, August 29, 2020, at 11:00 AM in St. Catherine of Siena Church, Pittstown, NJ. Interment will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery, Quakertown, NJ, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
