Absalom B. Kelley, veteran of the Civil war and
a resident of the Wilton Community for many years passed away at his home in east Wilton
Thursday afternoon at 4:15.
Mr. Kelley had been suffering from cancer for
many months but a rugged constitution
enabled him to keep upon his feet until
the final week of his illness.
Mr. Kelley was born in Penn. Aug. 12, 1841.
At the age of seven years he with his parents,
brothers and sister started for Iowa. Just
before reaching their destination an epidemic
of Cholera took the parents from the little
family and they were thrown upon the mercy
of their friends. Mr. Kelley was taken into
the home of a family north of Davenport
where he lived until the Civil war, when after
many failures he enlisted on May 11th, 1864.
He was assigned to Company I 44th Iowa
Infantry with which unit he served with
distinction until the close of the war. After
his discharge from the service he removed to Cedar County upon a farm where he remained
until 19 years ago, moving to Wilton where
he has since resided.
He was a member of the local Henry Siebert
Post until the local charter was surrendered
when he and a number of the other local
members transferred their membership to
the Shelby Norman Post of Muscatine.
Mr. Kelley is survived by his widow and four
sons, Roy B., Albert, Oliver and Irving of this
vicinity, four daughters, Mrs. Maude Smith,
Mrs. Anna Barclay, Mrs. Vera Lenker of Wilton,
and Mrs. Lela Marolf of Moscow. One brother,
John C. Kelley of Anita, Ia and one sister,
Mrs. Anna Lewis of Salem, Oregon.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday
afternoon at the Methodist church by the
Rev. A. W. McBlain assisted by Rev. Wirth, a
group of Civil War Veterans from Muscatine
gave the G.A.R. Ritual.
The local post of the American Legion acted
as pallbearers, and a guard of Honor. Inter-
ment was made in the Kelley lot at Oakdale where the American Legion guard fired the
salute to the departed soldier and Jacob Duffe blew "Taps".
