C.E. BUCHANAN, MOTHER OF GOP CANDIDATE, DIES
Catherine E. Buchanan, 83, a former registered nurse and the mother of Republican presidential candidate Pat Buchanan, died Sept. 18 at Fair Oaks Hospital of complications after stomach surgery. She fell at her home in Oakton on Aug. 11 and broke her arms.
Mrs. Buchanan was a native of Charleroi, Pa., and moved to Washington at 17 to study nursing at Providence Hospital. As a visiting nurse during the Depression, she helped deliver babies in the poor neighborhoods of the city. She married William B. Buchanan, an accountant, in 1932.
President Ronald Reagan appointed Mrs. Buchanan in 1982 to a commission that investigated conditions in rural health clinics. She was a teacher and member of the Sodality at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Washington, chairman of a Meals on Wheels program in Washington and a member of mothers clubs at Gonzaga College High School and Georgetown Visitation girls school.
Her husband died in 1988, and her eldest son, William B. Buchanan Jr., died in 1985.
In addition to her son Pat Buchanan of McLean, survivors include seven children, former U.S. treasurer Angela "Bay" Buchanan of Oakton, Henry M. Buchanan of Kensington, Dr. James M. Buchanan of Germantown, Kathleen Connolly of Fairfax, John E. Buchanan of Kensington, Dr. Brian D. Buchanan of Bedford, Va., and Thomas M. Buchanan of Alexandria; 28 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
