BUCHANAN, HENRY MARTIN, 76, died Wednesday, October 16 from complications of a stroke. Mr. Buchanan lived in Annapolis but spent most of his life in Washington, D.C. For most of his professional career, Mr. Buchanan owned Buchanan & Associates, a certified public accounting firm in Bethesda, which included more than 15 accountants at one time. He began his career at his father's accounting firm, Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell. He also held a law degree from Georgetown University School of Law. Mr. Buchanan moved to Annapolis eight years ago with his wife, Micheline, after raising five children in the Washington area. Mr. Buchanan was a third generation Washingtonian. Known as "Hank" most of his life, he was the second of nine children born to William Baldwin Buchanan and Catherine Crum. While attending Gonzaga College High School in his youth, he played football, basketball and baseball all four years. The football field at the high school is named after Mr. Buchanan's family, including his father and six brothers who all attended. An avid athlete, Mr. Buchanan ran marathons, played competitive tennis, and boxed. After running the Boston Marathon in 1976, he suspected the women's winner, Rosie Ruiz, had not actually run the race. In letters to the Washington Post and New York Times, Mr. Buchanan challenged Ms. Ruiz to a race offering her $100,000 if she won. The Boston Marathon race committee discovered soon after that Ms. Ruiz had actually taken the Boston subway for part of the race and stripped her of the title. Mr. Buchanan spent a year at the Jesuit Center, a Catholic seminary in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, after graduating from Georgetown University with a business degree in 1959. He then joined the U.S. Army, where he served as an artillery officer at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He married Micheline Curran in 1964. Mr. Buchanan served on the board of Mater Dei School in Bethesda, taught CCD at Our Lady of Mercy church in Potomac for more than 15 years, and was a long-time member of the Bethesda Rotary Club. Survivors include his wife Micheline, four daughters including: Rachel O'Hare (James) of Annapolis; Stephanie Buchanan (Jeremy) of East Chatham, New York; Yvette Purtill (Daniel) of Falls Church; and Elizabeth Crowley (Greg) of Charleston, South Carolina, one son: William Buchanan (Kristine) of Alpharetta, Georgia and 12 grandchildren. His surviving brothers and sisters include Patrick Buchanan of McLean, Virginia; James Buchanan of Darnestown, Maryland; Kathleen Connolly of Falls Church, Virginia; John Buchanan of Kensington, Maryland; Angela Buchanan of Oakton, Virginia and Brian Buchanan of Lynchburg, Virginia; Thomas Buchanan of Alexandria, Virginia. His older brother, William Baldwin Buchanan Jr., died in 1985. A memorial mass will be held on Monday Oct. 21, 10:30 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 620 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Raphael House, 1515 Dunster Road, Rockville, MD 20854. Arrangements by John M. Taylor Funeral Home.
