Dorothy Stephens Carder, 90, died peacefully Friday, October 2, 2015. Dotty lived a full life and will be remembered for her commitment to family and community.

Dotty was born October 11, 1924, to Clara and Thomas Stephens in Parkersburg, W.Va. She attended the University of West Virginia and married William Henderson Carder, who had graduated from Virginia Tech.Dotty and Bill moved to Roanoke in 1952 where five of their six children were born. Dotty was a devoted mother and community volunteer. She received the PTA's highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award. She also was an active member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church and the Junior League of the Roanoke Valley and was on the Board of Directors of Central Fidelity Bank. Dotty more recently volunteered at the History Museum of Western Virginia and was a member of the English-Speaking Union. In addition, she took great pleasure in playing bridge with her friends.

Dotty was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Carder.

She is survived by her six children, Nene Roe and husband, Dickie, Suzy Carder, Ann Hopkins and husband, Bill, Nanny Carder and husband, Ian Deshmukh, Billy Carder and wife, Vickie and John Carder and wife, Lee; nine grandchildren, Ashley Roe Gilreath, Amy Roe Millington, Catherine Roe Gilreath, Jason Wilburn, Kitty Hopkins, Virginia Hopkins Morris, Isabel Hopkins, Samantha Carder Meade and Bailey Carder; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at South Roanoke United Methodist Church with the Rev. Stanley L. Wright, Jr. officiating.In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to South Roanoke United Methodist Church, 2330 South Jefferson Street, Roanoke, VA 24014 or Epworth United Methodist Church, 60 Merriman Way Road, Moneta, VA 24121.
