Barbara was 81. She lived on Webster Avenue in Bonnet Shores, RI and was formerly of Cumberland, RI. She died unexpectedly at South County Hospital surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Barbara was born in Pawtucket,RI.

She was the daughter of the late George and Agnes (Flynn) McKnight. She was the wife of William 'Bill' Gardner. They were happily married for 55 wonderful years.

She was a 1947 graduate of Rhode Island College of Education. She was an elementary school teacher in the Pawtucket School Department for 30 years, retiring in 1988. She summered in Bonnet Shores and later retired there. She loved spending time with her family, friends and especially her grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her son, William Gardner, III and his wife Michaela of Narragansett; two daughters, MaeBeth Ryan and her husband Mark of Narragansett, and Barbara Gardner of Cumberland. She was the mother of the late Mark Gardner. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Mark, William, Graham, Maegan, Kristin, Kerrin and Max. She leaves three brothers, George, Jack and Graham McKnight; and two sisters, Agnes Bisset and MaeBeth McCormick; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Margaret 'Peggie' Sherry, Jane Bessette, James and Peter McKnight.

She is remembered by her friends and family as one of a kind. She was always laughing and giving a laugh. She enjoyed all the pleasures life could offer. She welcomes those she knew with open arms and love. She will always be in the hearts of those who loved her.
