Gertrude was the daughter of Lemon and Abby Galusha Sherman Thomson. She was the sister of Nancy Sherman Thomson Douglas. Her father was a well known Albany lumber merchant and paper manufacturer. In April 1889, Gertrude married John A. Dix. They had no children. John Dix became Governor of New York in 1910.

Gertrude had suffer from heart trouble that began in 1921. She moved to California and had lived there until her death. Her sister Nancy went to California a month before her death. She was 63 years when she died of Cardiac Compensation.
