Bob immigrated from Switzerland to the United States in 1948. During WWII, he had served in the Swiss Army. In 1950 he married Muriel Leeming of Newark, NJ, and they made their first home together in Verona, NJ. Subsequently they moved to North Caldwell for about 20 years, then retired to Blairstown, NJ, in 1986. Bob and Muriel were active in the United Methodist Church in Blairstown, as well as in many local social groups during their retirement.

Bob and Muriel were unable to have children of their own, but they very much enjoyed their nieces and nephews, frequently having them to stay for summer visits.

Bob always kept in close contact with his Swiss family. He and Muriel traveled on the luxury liner Constitution to Europe as part of their honeymoon. They frequently traveled to Europe throughout their marriage in order to visit with Bob's family or hosted his family on their visits to the United States. He was particularly fond of his sister's children, Ted and Brigette Widmer.

Bob suffered a massive stroke in mid-July of 2010. He passed away a week later.
