Lewis Alfred Shelton was born on February 9, 1937, in Louisa County, Virginia, to the late Robert and Vera Hunter Shelton. In the early morning hours of Monday, January 19, 2015, Lewis quietly concluded the journey designed for him on this Earth, at home, to be at rest for eternity.

He was one of 14 children: eight brothers and five sisters. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by seven brothers: Thomas, Earl, Robert, Herbert Lee, Clarence, Charles and James and a loving daughter, Doriane Shelton-Yancey.

Lewis received his education in the Louisa County Public Schools. He became a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he professed his belief in Jesus Christ at an early age. While toiling in faith, Lewis, delivered God’s message through song to many believers in surrounding counties as a founding member of The Rising Sun Jubilees. He was an active member of the Ebenezer Baptist Men’s Chorus until his health began to fail him.

On September 27, 1958, Lewis was joined in holy matrimony to the former Rose Marie Jackson. To their union, seven children were born. He and his family resided in Mineral, Virginia, while working various jobs to include: Walton and Wood Lumber Co., Jones Lumber Co., Tyler Wholesaling Co. (Ross Woolfolk), and finally retiring from Tradewinds, Inc.

Lewis leaves cherished memories to: his loving wife of over 56 years, Rose; four sons, Lewis, Jr., Roger (Patricia), Allen (Carrie), and James, all of Louisa; two daughters, Christine (Benny) of West Deptford, New Jersey, and Gail (Ed) of Richmond, Virginia. He also leaves a brother, Raymond Shelton, and five sisters, Vera Butler-Lee (Jesse), Martha Wood (Lionel), Mary Alsop (Roger), Dorothy Hunter and Frances Shelton; eight grandchildren, Toyrie Jackson (Garrett), Kimberly and Joseph Yancey, Taneika Houchens, Roger Shelton, Jr., Allen Taylor, Jamie and Shamar Shelton; one great-grandson, Kaiden; one dedicated niece, Amanda McMacken; devoted cousins, Vergie Shelton and George Mickens; caring neighbors, Julian Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. Robert Jones and Carrie Yancey, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Rising Sun Baptist Church with Rev. William House officiating and the Rev. Frederick Sales eulogist. Interment will follow in the Shelton family cemetery.
