June was born and raised in the Snow Camp community on her parent’s dairy farm. She graduated from Eli Whitney High School. Later in life she earned her BA in Business from UNC-Greensboro and in her 70’s completed a Master of Liberal Studies degree at UNC-Greensboro. She continued to explore ideas by participating in UNCG Emeritus and Shepherd Center classes.
As a stay-at-home mother and wife, she raised 5 children in Burlington – initially on Wilkins Street and later as a single parent on Shirley Drive. Her work outside the home began at Sellars Department Store and culminated with a position in the US State Department, serving in Copenhagen, Denmark and London, England.
She is survived by her five children: Terry Carey of Indian Trail NC, Irv Carey (Amy) of Seneca MD, Joel Carey (Joyce) of California MD, Tim Carey (Rese) Snow Camp NC, and Crystal Carey (Brawner) of Arlington VA. Her nine grandchildren are Bo, Brian, Jane, Nick, Leiah, Lenny, Jeff, Tim, and Carly. Her six great-grandchildren are Tanner, Garrett, Thomas, Pearl, Christopher, and Anderson. While predeceased by her brother, Ben Pugh, she is survived by two sisters: Francis Payne of Burlington and Isabel Morrow of Hillsborough.
A graveside service celebrating June’s life will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, September 8th, at South Fork Friends Church in Snow Camp. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all are asked to wear masks and practice appropriate social distancing. Bring your chair. Burial will follow at the South Fork cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to AuthoraCare Collective (2500 Summit Ave Greensboro, NC 27405). Donations to honor Mom’s life may also be sent to South Fork Friends Church cemetery fund (359 South Fork-Bethel Road Snow Camp, NC 27349). The family is deeply grateful for the support of friends and for the hospice care provided by nurses and staff at AuthoraCare during Mom’s life, especially in recent months.
