James Cooper Hensley was the son of Levin Hensley and Mary Jane Summers. He was born in Vincennes, Knox Co. Indiana on the 15th day of January 1846. It was right at the time certain borders were changing and he is often listed as being born in Illinois. James had three sisters, Sarah J, Mary A and his baby sister Frances Helen FAG #148248300. His family line of Hensley's are down Samuel Hensley and Martha Snell. Then through James Hensley and Catherine Waller. Next down Samuel Hensley FAG #131990573 and Alsafair Cooper FAG #131990478. Finally through Levin Hensley and Mary Summers.

James Hensley First married Mary Jane Morgan and together they had four children Mary Ella, Sallie Elsie, Leven Newton and William Summer Morgan Hensley. With three surviving into adulthood. After the loss of his first wife, he married again to Mary Matilda Goodall. Together they had seven children, Lillie Caroline, Lulu Harriet, Frances Helen, James Garrett, Lee Pleasant and Charles Pearl Hensley. Six surviving into adulthood.

Known to love his horses and for being a loving father. He was greatly missed after his death on the 10th day of July 1921 in Valley Springs, Boone Co. Arkansas.
