Prime Minister of Portugal. He served on four different occasions. First, from April 20, 1836 to September10, 1836, second from February 9, 1842 to May 20, 1846, third from April 26, 1851 to May 1, 1851 and finally from March 16, 1859 to May 1, 1860. Prior to becoming prime minister, he was the son of wealthy nobility. In 1802, at nine years old, he had joined the 4th Regimental Cavalry as a cadet, and would be promoted to ensign by 1807. He resigned his commission when the French invaded Portugal. After the expulsion of the French, he returned to the army and was made a lieutenant, later to captain. He fought in the Peninsular War. For his valor he was made a colonel and decorated Knight of the Order of the Tower and Sword. He was also 16th Captain General of the Azores and 11th Governor of Grão-Pará. In 1832 he was made Duke of Terceira. He is best remembered for his military accomplishments and diplomatic acumen.
