Rothwell was the son of Robert Leander Calfee and Josephine Leigh Stafford. He married Josephine Pierson, and they were the parents of Josephine Leigh Calfee.

CALFEE, Rothwell L. - Service 2 p.m. today, St. Marks Episcopal Church, the Rev. Harold N. White, Cunningham Memorial Park. Mr. Calfee, 63, of 847 Sweet Acres Dr., died Tuesday at home after a six month illness. Horticulture teacher for five years at West Virginia Rehabilitation Center Institute, native of Beckley, had lived in St. Albans 19 years. World War II veteran, head of the National youth division of the Veterans Administration in Webster Springs, member of St. Marks Episcopal Church in St. Albans. Surviving: widow, Josephine Pierson Calfee; daughter, Mrs. Josephine Leigh Sutherland of St. Albans. In lieu of Flowers, the family suggests donations be made to West Virginia Rehabilitation Center. Casdorph-Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans.
