Carmella E. Capotorto, 83, died on Thursday, December 28, 2006 at the home of her nephew and his wife, Jim and Colleen Baris, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Utica, July 17, 1923, a daughter of the late Martino and Isabella (Colucci) Capotorto. She was educated in local schools and was a 1942 graduate of T.R. Proctor High School. Following high school, Carmella received her degree in nursing in 1946, at Bellevue Hospital in NYC. Carmella was a truly dedicated and compassionate RN, having spent her early career working for Bellevue Hospital. She later returned to Utica and was employed at the early Slocum Dickson, Utica General Hospital and Visiting Nurses Assoc. She ended her long career working at the Masonic Home as a supervising RN, retiring in the early 1980's. Utmost in Carmella's life was her love for her family. She showered her siblings, her many nieces and nephews with more genuine affection, support and steadfast love than anyone could desire in a lifetime. She loved to travel and spent many vacations touring Italy, Europe and Hawaii, including yearly religious trips to Canada. Carmella was a devout catholic whose commitment to her love of Jesus brought her on many pilgrimages in his honor and the honor of his mother Mary. For many years, she was a daily communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church and it was her deep and abiding faith that radiated from her and sustained her to the end. She is survived by her sisters and brother-in-law, Angelina Baris, Martha Pannafino, Esther and Joseph Baris and her brother John Capotorto. She was predeceased by her sisters, Stella, Mary and Margaret Capotorto and brothers-in-law, Thomas Baris and Dominic Pannafino. Her many nieces and nephews and their families will always cherish her memory. She will be remembered for her selflessness, her generosity and unconditional love. She connected us all and will be sorely missed. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial which will be held on Saturday morning at 10 am at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Private interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
