John Harvey Arnold, Civil war veteran said by relatives to be 106 years old, died at 4 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, on Morgan avenue. He had been ill for nearly two years. Mr. Arnold was born in Clay county, Kentucky, and came to Sangamon county eighty-eight years ago. He acquired a small farm but left home to serve his country, enlisting in the Eighty-fifth Illinois infantry. He participated in the battles of Perrysville, Ky., where he was slightly wounded, Big Shanty, Peach Orchard, Stone River and other important engagements. In the battles before Atlanta, Mr. Arnold, color sergeant of his company, was shot nine tines, five bullets taking effect in his right shoulder and arm, others penetrating both thighs and his right leg and foot. He never regained the entire use of his right arm and since the Civil war had been on the pension list as a disabled veteran. He was a member of Stephenson Post No. 30, Grand Army of the Republic and for several years was active in the work of the Salvation Army in this city.
Decedent is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mildred Arnold; a daughter, Jeannette; a son, Richard, at home; and a half-sister, Mrs. Charles Owen, city. IL State Journal, Springfield, Il, 1-25-1928
