He enlisted as a Private from Freeport in Company K, 20th Infantry Regiment Maine on 29 August 1862. The regiment was organized that date in Portland and William would have been 18 at the time of his enlistment. He was killed, as a member of that unit, on 2 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
