On February 1, 1877 as S.W. Kearney, she married James Russell Selfridge at the Church of Transfiguration in New York City.
She was the eldest of three children born to General Philip Kearny and his second wife, Agnes Maxwell. She was named after her paternal grandmother (an earlier daughter of the same name from Kearny's first marriage had died in infancy in 1843). She was born in Paris, where her as yet unmarried parents had taken up residence to escape the censure of New York society. Her parents were married in 1858 after his first wife agreed to a divorce. Her early childhood was spent at Bellegrove, her father's country estate in present-day Kearny, New Jersey, with her mother and younger siblings Archie and Virginia. In 1862, when she was six years old, her little brother died of typhoid and her father died at Chantilly. About six years later her mother married Admiral John H. Upshur, USN, a widower with several children and Suzy, then twelve, became part of the American naval community. Both she and her younger sister married navy officers from prominent families. Her husband, Lieut. Commander J. Russell Selfridge, USN, was the son of Commodore Selfridge, USN. She researched the details of her father's life as he was often away fighting, first in Italy and then in Virginia, for three years of her life. She gave lectures, attended veterans' events and funded memorials across the country in his name.
