Francis Henry Darrow was born in New York state where he taught school a few years. He soon decided to try farming, and went west.
He first worked for the railroad in Kansas as a surveyor. There he met and married the love of his life Katherine Eliza Seaburn. During his work for the railroad company, he broke his leg and had to walk with a cane for the rest of his life.
He eventually moved to Arkansas, and the apple farm he lived on in Arkansas was known as "Aunt Mame's Place. His farm was located in Beaty Arkansas.
