Maxine Theresa Bennett, 85, of Grand Marais, died Tuesday morning September 22, 2020 at Mill Creek Assisted Living in Marquette.

Born November 7, 1934 in Grand Marais, she was the second child of the late Edward and Bernice (Boisclair) Bennett. She attended school in Grand Marais and Sault Ste. Marie until the family moved to Niles, Michigan in 1950. Following graduation from Niles High School in 1952, she spent three years on active duty in the United States Navy until her honorable discharge on December 21, 1956.

Maxine attended Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Ferris State University in Big Rapids with a dental assistant degree. She worked as a dental assistant in Michigan and California.

Upon returning to Michigan, Maxine enrolled at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo receiving a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

Maxine's work experience included civil service and United State Army Reserve center in various states. She spent 20 years as an Army reservist until her retirement attaining the rank of Master Sergeant.

Following her retirement, Maxine returned to the Upper Peninsula. She especially loved Grand Marais and the Superior Shore Market where she spent many hours. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Maxine was always smiling. She loved music, dancing, walking, casino gaming and always had a good time.

Survivors include her sister Normajean Bennett of Grand Marais; brother Paul (Susan) Bennett of Lakewood Ranch, Florida and Grand Marais; niece Karen Bennett of Florida and nephew Carl (Meredith) Bennett of Pennsylvania.

The family will receive friends at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Grand Marais on Thursday October 1, 2020 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm at the church with Fr. Marty Flynn officiating.

Rite of Committal with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post #74 and the United States Army Honor Guard will take place at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery.
