Mary Lee Russ, 94, Columbia, TN, formerly of Winslow, IN, passed away at The Garden at Poplar Estates in Columbia, TN on Thursday, September 24, 2020.

Mary was born March 20, 1926 to John H. and Margaret Pearl (Sheffler) Carpenter in Linton, IN. Mary and her family moved to Winslow, IN when she was a baby. She attended Winslow High School in 1944. At age 14 she contracted polio and spent one year in isolation at Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. She graduated from Indiana State University in 1948 and later received her Masters degree in Elementary Education. Mary taught 42 years at Winslow Elementary School and retired from the Pike County School System in 1992.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Dale Russ, father, John H. Carpenter, mother, Margaret Pearl Sheffler Carpenter, sister, Betty Carpenter Pierce, infant brother, Robert Carpenter.

She is survived by three daughters, Maryilyn (James) Johnston of Columbia, TN, Becky (Steve) Downing of Bremen, IN, and Carol Sue Owen of Columbia, TN, 4 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and sister-in-law Marilee Russ Hume. Mary was a member of Eastern Star in Winslow, IN for over 70 years, holding all offices in that organization at least once. She was an artist and enjoyed oil painting. In 1997 Mary moved to Columbia, TN to be near family members. From 1997 to 2004 she spent winters in Tennessee and summers in Indiana. Mary was a member of Winslow General Baptist Church as was her parents, her husband and his family. After moving to Columbia, TN she moved her membership to Pleasant Heights Baptist church. Funeral services will be held on Sunday Sept. 27, 2020 at 1:30 P.M. (CST) at the Winslow General Baptist Church, 600 East Union Street in Winslow, IN with interment at Sunset Cemetery in Winslow, IN., Visitation will be held on Saturday Sept. 26, 2020 from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. (CST) at Lamb Basham Memorial Chapel in Oakland City and from 12:30 P.M. until services on Sunday at the church.
