Secretary of Writers Association, Widely Known at Tracks

John I. Day, secretary of the Turf Writers Association, and for years A prominent figure in racing circles all over the country, died in Nassau County Hospital yesterday after an illness of several days. He was 69. Mr. Day, who recently made his home in Miami, was on a short visit to his son, Sam H. Day of 16 Kingsbury Road, Garden City, when he was taken ill of internal hemorrhages. The Son of Dr. Sam Huston and Mary Mee Day, he was born in Cleveland, Tenn., on May 15, 1870. For more than 30 years he was a sports writer in San Francisco, Chicago and New York.

He was sports writer of the San Francisco Bulletin from 1904 to 1906 and of the Chicago Inter-Ocean from 1907-1915. From that year until 1924 he was turf editor of the old New York Morning Telegraph. During about the same period, 1915 to 1925, he was presiding steward of Hialeah Race Track, Miami. He has for years been a member of the New York State Racing Commission.

Mr Day is survived by the widow, Mrs. Grace B. Day of Miami; three sons, Sam, John I. Day, Jr., and Donald S. Day who is a European correspondent of the Chicago Tribune, and two daughters, Miss Dorothy Day and Mrs. Franklin Spier, both of Manhattan.
