Mathias Amundsen was born 22 May 1854 on the farm Slaastuen (now called Slåstugu, located at 61.55361, 9.50069) in Kvikne, Nord-Fron, Oppland County, Norway, in the historic region of Gudbrandsdalen. Mathias and his twin sister, Marit Amundsdatter, were the seventh and eighth children born to Amund Johannessen (originally from Vaterland under Øvre Graupe) and Mari Knudsdatter (originally from Nedre Graupe). This set of twins was a sad story, as their mother died the day they were born and Marit died the next day. Their next older siblings, Ole and Mari, also twins (born 4 Jun 1852), lived only four and twelve months. Mathias' parents' second child also died in infancy.

Mathias was baptized in the Kvikne church in Nord-Fron 5 Jun 1854 (two days after the funeral for his mother and twin sister), with godparents Torger Groupe, Erland Hage, Iver Skaboe, Rønnoug Groupe, and Oline Groupe. Mathias was home baptized by Poul Slaaen (his twin sister was home baptized by Marit Grosberghagen). Mathias' father remarried 20 Jul 1857, and had five children from that marriage. Mathias was vaccinated 24 Nov 1858 by M. Lillejevne. Mathias was confirmed 23 May 1869 in the Kvikne church, where he was rated: knowledge fair, diligence good, conduct very good. (Except for Slåstugu, 61.55361 9.50069, Gudbrandsdalen, and the identification of Øvre and Nedre Graupe, the above facts are all from the Fron church records. From findagrave contributor Espa, 47356725.)

Mathias came to America approx. 1879 and married Rønnaug Pedersdatter from Nord-Fron 20 Jan 1881 in Polk County, Wisconsin.
