Alice Jeanne Huddleston died peacefully in her home on September 29, 2020, with her family by her side. Alice Jeanne, fondly known as AJ, was born in Pittsburgh on July 19, 1924 to the late Howard H. Haworth (1901 - 1968)and Margarett T. Haworth (1900 - 1991).

The family moved to Birmingham when she was 16. She graduated from Ramsey High School and went on to study piano at Ward-Belmont College in Nashville. She graduated from University of California at Berkeley, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in English.

In 1953, she married George Huddleston, Jr. (1920-1971) who represented the State of Alabama in the United States House of Representatives from 1955 to 1965. They were married for 18 years until his death in 1971.

The Huddlestons lived in the Washington, D.C., area while serving in Congress, and in 1975 AJ and her family moved back to Birmingham.

AJ was a devout Christian and a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Known for her infectious laughter and witty sense of humor, she was full of life and always active. She took great joy in spending time with her family. She once took five of her young grandchildren on a cross-country trip to the Grand Canyon, and at the age of 76, she was spotted playing basketball in the driveway with one of her grandsons. She spent much of her time studying the Bible, praying and caring for others. She was a generous, kind and truly selfless lady.

AJ was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother Michael Elliott Haworth, Jr.

She is survived by her children, George Huddleston, III, Maggie Asher and Nancy O’Reilly, her nine grandchildren and her eight great grandchildren.

Graveside services for the family will be private.
