Fred was born in Athens, Ohio on October 31, 1945. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in the early part of 1968. He and I commenced boot camp training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Platoon 161 on April 8, 1968. He kept up with most of the other recruits four years younger must have been difficult for him. I never heard him whine or giving up, he took everything the drill instructors threw at him and kept going. We both earned the title "U.S. Marines" 0n June 3, 1968 and became brothers forever.

After his MOS training as a machine gunner, he started his tour in Vietnam on August 29, 1968. He served with 2nd Platoon, Mike Co., 3rd Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, III MAF. While on patrol during Operation Dewey Canyon, he was killed in an ambush from a RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) on February 10, 1969.

Note: It irks me to see the year of his death is wrong on his grave marker. Our government can't get that right for someone who has given so much for our country.
