Yvonne Acoff was born August 25, 1929, in Corona, Alabama, to David and Maggie Sykes Harris. She attended Moscada, Alabama, High School, where she graduated Valedictorian in 1946. She moved to Gary, Indiana, after graduation. She was married to Willie Lee Acoff, Sr., and eight children were born to their union. They enjoyed more than 60 years together.
Yvonne owned and operated Creative Child Care for five years. She was also a Presser for Joyce Sportswear, retiring in 1994. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Gary, IN. She diligently served in various ministries including: The Volunteer Club, General Mission, Food Pantry, and The Prison Ministry. In addition she served as a volunteer church van driver, a Sunday School Teacher, a Deaconess, a Matron with the Church Women United and a National Baptist Congress representative.
Yvonne departed this earthly life into life eternal on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Maggie Sykes Harris, brother, Rovelta Finley, sons, Willie Jr., Tyrone, and daughter, Carol Jean Acoff Maxfield. Also preceding her in death was her father- & mother-in-law, Turner and Cora Lee Acoff. Yvonne leaves to cherish her memory her husband Willie Lee Acoff, Sr.; sons, Ronald, Michael, Kenneth, Anthony, and Gregory. Also celebrating the memory of her life are her brother, Waddell Harris, and sisters, Christine Robinson, Claudia Robinson, Juanita Harris, and Geralene Harris, and her nineteen grand and great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and dear friends.
