Merle was the son of Lester Weeks and Mildred Adams Cushman. He served his country in the U.S.Navy from 1930 to 1936, then was reactivated during WWII and served until his retirement in 1972 as Chief Petty Officer.He was injured during a kamikaze attack on the USS DuPage on Jan. 10,1945.He returned to Maine and worked as a cabinetmaker until 1978.He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping.
He was also a descendant of Thomas and Mary Allerton Cushman..Mary Allerton was a passenger on the Mayflower..with her parents, Isaac and Mary Norris Allerteon..along with her siblings. Mary Allerton Cushman was the last remaining Mayflower survivor at the time of her death.
