Albert “Bert” Oral Allen was born August 24, 1899 in Shirley, Tyler County, West Virginia. Bert was the third of twelve children born to Reuben Allen (1872 – September 20, 1949) and Cora A. (Ford) Allen (April 24, 1875 – September 3, 1951): Madge Lillie (Allen) Reilly (March 20, 1896 – August 9, 1995), Ethel Mae (Allen) Maynard (December 28, 1897 – August 27, 1989), Albert “Bert” Oral Allen, Pastal Leroy Allen (September 7, 1901 – December 1971), James Francis Allen (July 26, 1903 – June 6, 1970), Hazel Faye (Allen) Duncan (December 20, 1905 – May 12, 2002), Aumbra (Allen) Settlemire (February 17, 1907 – June 15, 1993), Russell Elis Allen (December 26, 1908 – April 25, 1996), Derril Ronald Allen (January 20, 1910 – January 20, 1963), Adah Virgil (Allen) Nedros (December 17, 1911 – July 27, 1989), Edna V. (Allen) Diethelm Pope (July 7, 1913 -February 23, 1991) and Mary Alice (Allen) Lawson (June 17, 1917 – April 5, 1992). About 1906, Bert moved west with his family to Clinton, Whitman County, Washington. Then in 1918, the family moved again to Moscow, Latah County, Idaho. Their address was RD 3, Moscow. His parents, Reuben and Cora lived there for the rest of their lives. Reuben was a farmer. Bert worked for R.S. Taylor as a farm laborer. About 1920, Bert’s sister Madge was living in a boarding house in Moscow. She became friends with Rachel Cooper who was also living in the boarding house. Madge introduced her brother to Rachel. Bert was working as a clerk in a bank in Moscow at the time and Rachel was working as a stenographer in an office. Bert and Rachel married July 23, 1925 in Salem, Marion County, Oregon. They began their married life living in Moscow where their first child, Richard Albert Allen was born in May 1926. Bert and Rachel and son Richard moved to Kellogg, Shoshone County, Idaho where Kenneth Glenn Allen (April 24, 1930 – October 23, 1968) and Betty Rae (Allen) Morrill (July 13, 1931 – September 14, 2019) were born. Their first-born Richard died September 27, 1928 and was buried in the Moscow Cemetery next to his first cousin, Hazel Alma Hart (February 14, 1919 – April 17, 1927). Bert Allen worked for Bunker Hill Co. in Kellogg, Idaho. Bert and Rachel moved their family to Seattle, Washington in 1936. He worked for Northwest Lead Co. in Seattle as a sheet metal worker until he retired. Rachel Gladys (Cooper) Allen died August 19, 1964. On January 19, 1967. Bert married Nellie Viola Gamet (April 27, 1901 – February 17, 1999). They made their home in Clarkston, Washington. Albert “Bert” Oral Allen died January 9, 1974 in Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington. Albert “Bert” Oral Allen and Rachel Gladys (Cooper) Allen are buried together in Evergreen Cemetery, later renamed Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery, Seattle, Washington.
