Bio Information by S Lowther
Zura "Zuritha Eckford daughter of James Eckford and Harriet S Parrish (both parents are attached to her memorial)
Born in the hot month of August in Columbus ,Lowndes County ,MS
Her Given name Zuretha I believe to be associated with her Uncle William Eckford's Young Wife Zuretha who died in Lowndes County,MS in 1837.
Zura's Siblings were: 1 sister Mary Eliza born 1835 Limestone,AL died 13 September 1837 in Columbus MS along with 5 brothers :John Thomas, James William, Henry P ,Robert P and Walter Scott Eckford (4 of her siblings are linked to her memorial by me, all except for Walter S born 1844-1900 , his memorial requires further research.

After the death of her mother in 1862 ,her Father remarried to Harriett Jones Brierly in 1867 ,they had one daughter together Lily Josephine Eckford 1870(they too, are also linked to the family's memorials by me )
*Note: It is said in the obit of Zura's Husband (in later years to come )that Zura herself had given up all 5 of her brothers to the Southern Cause but in fact they all survived the War ( Maybe the paper wanted the article to sound Gone with the Windish in a sense ?)most of her brothers served under Captain Smith and Turner's Light Artillery at sometime in the Confederate War .

Zura married Col Clark Russell Barteau in Noxubee MS 21 May 1864, moving from MS, Kentucky, and finally settling in TN Bartlett and Memphis areas. They had one child together Hattie E Barteau 1866-1953 who married Thomas B Caldwell around 1886.
From a newspaper article Ive clipped ,Zura did go back home to Macon MS every once in a while to visit.
Her father James died in 1873 ,the family that was held together by him for so long seemed to scatter into the winds .Court disputes between His children and Harriet Brierly Eckford over his wills, lands and monies that were either owed to his children or were hidden from them are found in James Eckford's Legal Papers .Harriett sold everything that she could and moved back up North with daughter Lily

Another tragedy in Sept 1873 her brother James William died of yellow disease in Macon, MS ,then Her oldest Brother John Thomas in 1897 Clarke County MS , Henry P in Belzoni , MS in 1881, Walter Scott in Montgomery ,AL in 1900 and last but not least her Robert P Eckford travelled Missouri, Kansas, Tennessee, Colorado, settling in California ,He was the last of the siblings to be alive but passed away in South Pasadena CA in 1935.He even named his first born daughter Zura in 1883.

Zura's Husband Col Clark R Barteau died: 10 February 1900 in Memphis, Shelby, TN
Zura herself passed away in Gartley-Ramsey Hospital (which has now been demolished many yrs ago) on 08 May 1912 from a lingering illness, she is buried near her Husband in Elmwood Cemetery.
This is my research and facts collected over the years by me on my many branches of Eckford FamilyTree, if you would like to add something to my history contact me
If Copying anything
please be kind and keep my name with my work.
Zura was my 3rd Great Grand Aunt sister to John Thomas Eckford my 3rd Great Grandfather
