FREEMAN C. DODGE.
DIED - At his ranch near Alliance, Nebraska, of heart failure, Thursday, September 26th. 1907, Freeman C. Dodge, aged 68 years and 13 days. . . The remains were brought to Wood River on Saturday and funeral services were held at the residence, conducted by Rev. J. C. Irwin. . . and interment took place in the Wood River cemetery. . .
Freeman C. Dodge was born in Croydon, Sullivan, New Hampshire, October 13th, 1830. When twelve years old he went with his parents to Cleamont, New Hampshire, where he attained his majority. He spent the year 1865 in Pennsylvania. In 1866 he came to Nebraska, taking up a homestead one half mile north of the present town of Wood River. Mr. Dodge came to Nebraska poor in purse (about $17 all told) but with plenty of energy, industry and ability. At first a sod house was built, then a log one, followed in later years by a beautiful residence . . . Mr. Dodge gave his attention almost exclusively to farming and stock raising. . . Shortly after coming to Nebraska in the year 1869 he was married to Miss Ellen Abbott of Hall county and of this union one child was born, Gertrude, now Mrs. I. C. Williams, who together with his wife survive to mourn the loss of a husband and father. . . His two nieces, Alla and Leah Dodge, daughters of his brother, George deceased, made their home with him since childhood. . . He also leaves two brothers and one sister living in New Hampshire . . .
