William was the 8th of ten children of James Dana, a successful hardware merchant, was born in Utica, NY on August 26, 1829. His mother was Harriet Dwight Dana. After graduating he studied law and admitted to the bar in 1853 and practiced in Utica until 1861. He moved to New York and purchased the Hunt's Merchants' Magazine. He established the "Commercial and Financial Chronicle" in 1863. He died in New York in October 10, 1910 after a confinement at his home due to complications of broken thigh due to a fall. In September 18, 1855, he married Katherine Floyd of Mastic, New York. They adopted 4 children having none of their own.
