Obit: Audubon Republican:(summary) Jesse Collins Keith was born in Warren county, OH April 5, 1822. He moved with his parents to Shelby county, IN when he was 5 years of age. Here he remained with his father on the farm until the war with Mexico broke out in 1846 and he enlisted in Co H, 3rd Regiment Indiana Volunteers, and served his county in that trying time almost a year. He engaged in the battle of Buena Vista.
In 1857 he left Indiana and came to Davis county, IA. Later he moved to Fremont, Mahaska county, IA and was among those who saw Iowa's fertile soil, its splendid streams, its magnificent resources and realized it would become a veritable garden. He was married to Mary Canon Nov 12, 1861 at Fremont, IA. When he came to Audubon county in 1882, he located in Viola twp where he remained 2 years. Te then moved to Melville twp where he remained until 1892 when with his family he located in the thriving town of Audubon where he remained until his death.
Uncle Jesse was the oldest Mason in the state of Iowa, joining about 3 years before coming west. He became a member at Shelbyville, IN in 1864.
Mr Keith was the father of 13 children, 8 of whom with his companion survive. Those living are Marshall E Keith, Bedford, IA; O D Keith, Great Falls, MT; Preston J Keith, Audubon; Mrs Minnie Hunter, Glidden; Mrs Nellie McIntire, Oklahoma City, OK; B A Keith, Mabel Keith of Audubon and Gus C Keith of Montana, all of whom were present at the funeral but the 2 sons in Montana. There are also 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
