PIONEER OF GALENA PASSES AWAY
At Noon Today Mrs. Amanda Pond, Mother of Mrs. E. B. Archer Passed Into Life Eternal.
Shortly after 12 o’clock, noon today, Mrs. Amanda Pond, mother of Mrs. E. B. Archer, was called to her eternal rest after an illness of eight months duration, during which time she was a most patient sufferer.
Mrs. Pond was born in Green County, Kentucky, April 29, 1839. Her maiden name was Miss Amanda Allen. While yet a child she, with her parents, went to Chillicothe, Missouri to reside.
She was married to James M Pond at Chillicothe. To this union two daughters were born, Linea C, who died when twenty years of age, and Mrs. E. B. Archer of this city.
In 1875 Mrs. Pond, with her family came to Galena and has resided here since that time. During the last few years she has made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Archer, No. 908 Galena Avenue. When a girl of sixteen she united with the Methodist Episcopal church and during her remaining years lived a consistent Christian life.
Her home instincts were strong and her affection for kindred and friends was tender and abiding, being a kind neighbor, devoted mother, a true friend, and a woman of heroic mold in bravely meeting the stern requirements of life.
Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. E. B. Archer, also one grandson, Earl Smith of Denver, Colorado and one great-grand-son Edward Smith-Archer.
The body will lie in state in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Archer from 12 o’clock Wednesday noon until 12 o’clock Thursday noon. Funeral services are to be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 from the Methodist Episcopal church, with the pastor, Reverend O. K. Hobson and Reverend S. F. Stephens of Neosho, Missouri, officiating.
Interment will be made in the Galena cemetery beside her husband, the late James M. Pond, whose death occurred in 1906.
The pall bearers are Harry Smith of Joplin, George Kennison of Baxter, Lewis Soulen, A. G. Peck, C. W. Squires and C. H. McNay.
