Neil Elwood Sampson, 90 years of age, passed away on October 16, 2020, peacefully at home, surrounded by family.

Neil was born on October 21, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA, and married on November 4, 1949 to Marian Helen Schmidt in Waukegan, IL.

He is survived by nine (9) children, Paul (Cheryl) of San Diego, CA, Jon (Kazuko) of Colorado Springs, CO, Robert (Janet) of Lakeside, CA, William (Rebecca) of Lehi, UT, Mark of Upper Lake, CA, Anne of San Diego, CA, Kathryn of San Diego, CA, Eileen (Thomas) of Grants Pass, OR, and Douglas (Georgia) of Madison, AL; and his 26 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Neil is preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife of 63 years, Marian, two grandchildren Michelle Anne and Bret Andrew, four great-grandchildren Shaun Michael, Shaun Alexander and Shayne Anthony, and Bentley Tyler, and daughter-in-law Kathleen.

Neil joined the Navy on September 30, 1948. His, more than 25 year, career included graduating from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Special Services in Da Nang, Vietnam, underway training in Guantanamo, Cuba, and Subic Bay, Philippines, serving aboard USS Strickland (DER-333) Plank Owner, USS Wexford County (LST-1168) Plank Owner, USS Reeves (DLG/CG 24) Plank Owner, USS Horne (DLG/CG-30), and service at various installations in Jacksonville, FL; Norfolk, VA; Kami Seya, Japan; Treasure Island, CA; Bremerton, WA; Long Beach, CA. Finally landing in San Diego, CA where he retired as a Lt. Commander on March 31, 1974.

After retiring from the Navy, Neil worked for various military contractors always staying in close contact with his beloved Navy.

Once fully retired Neil and Marian traveled extensively throughout the United States, the country they both dearly loved, and traveled by sea to Europe.

Neil volunteered his time generously. He was a volunteer at The Immaculata, the Treasurer for the Knights of Columbus, the Treasurer and then President of the San Diego Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.

Mass will be held at The Immaculata Parish on USD Campus 5998 Alcala Pk, San Diego CA 92110 on Wednesday, October 28 at 10:00 am. Masks will be required to enter the church.
