Born just a few days before Christmas on December 23, 1953, Alfred was the son of the late Allison and Catherine Baynes Garland. He attended Jordan-Sellars High School and graduated with the 1972 Class of Walter M. Williams High School.
Alfred was known for his neat dress and for being a trendsetter with many remembering his 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass, equipped with a TV and antenna (Super-Fly Style). He was a gifted Brick Mason who took pride in his work and the craftsmanship of his structures were second to none. He also loved to bowl and was awarded multiple trophies in local and regional championship tournaments.
As a child he became a member of Sweet Gum Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Mebane, North Carolina and reunited with the church a few years ago attending both Sunday School and Morning Worship Services until his health declined.
