Son of Isabel(la) Dowell and William Shepherd. Christened 20 Jul 1838 in the parish of Banchory Ternan. All birth information from Scottish records. Saint John burial permit says b 1841.

Married Jane Noble 31 Dec 1868 Newhills, Aberdeenshire. Three daughters b Banchory Ternan 1869, 1871, 1873 - see list below.

Immigrated to Canada 1874 aboard the SS Sidonian with wife, children, parents and younger brother George (b 18 Oct 1855 Banchory Ternan) (Saint John Daily Telegraph, Thu 14 May 1874).

The newcomers were intended to settle to Victoria County NB. Indeed, William Shepherd d Feb 1878 in Upper Kintore, New Kincardine, Victoria County (Saint John Daily Telegraph, Sat 16 Feb 1878). Isabella Dowell Shepherd, her son George and her granddaughter Jane Ann were enumerated in Perth, Victoria County, in 1881, and Isabella d 15 Sep 1881 Perth (Saint John Daily Telegraph, Thu 29 Sep 1881).

However, Jane Noble Shepherd, Alexander and their other two daughters either never went to Victoria County or didn't remain there long. They were enumerated in Saint John in 1881, where they may already have settled on Sandy Point Road, far enough from the city centre that Alexander could farm.

Alexander's residence at time of death = Sandy Point Road. Died of heart disease.
